Growing up in a rural area, I’ve always been surrounded by the environment. Recently I began to realize how I’ve always taken this for granted. I love nature and the relaxing sensation it provides me, but I’ve never gone out of my way to preserve its beauty. Because of this, I decided to clean up part of the Riverwalk area of downtown Naperville.

I choose a clear day with warm weather to start my task. The city’s carillon provided occasional instances of welcomed entertainment throughout the afternoon. While I was picking up trash, I told people in the area what I was doing. By doing this, I hoped that I’d inspire them to clean up another part of our community!

Several hours and a bag and a half of garbage later, I was satisfied with the area. I was slightly discouraged that I was able to find so much garbage though, because I thought this meant a lot of people carelessly littered. However, I suddenly realized that the area didn’t have enough trash receptacles, resulting in all the litter. I knew that if I could get trash cans installed the situation would significantly improve.

I’ve since sent a letter to several city officials, urging them to improve the garbage and recycling program along the Riverwalk area. I look forward to see if my effort will help the community. I’m already pleased with the work I’ve done, knowing that I’ve created a cleaner and safer place in nature.
