Environmental Restoration
Each day the world becomes more and more polluted. With every piece of trash dropped and ton of toxic waste expelled, we hurt our planet. Even with all the regulations that prevent companies from releasing a certain amount of waste from their smokestacks, the Earth is damaged significantly. One person does have the chance to make a difference and in a variety of ways. I was given that chance this summer. I chose to spend my summer in Bat Yam/ Holon, Israel and volunteer in an environmental restoration and litter control organization. Three days a week my fellow volunteers and I would spend four-and-a-half hours restoring the area surrounding vandalized schools. This including picking up a great deal of trash, trimming trees, cutting grass, and beautifying the gardens that struggled to grow in the Israeli heat. One day per week we would go work on the beaches simply removing trash. After hours of work removing all sorts of disgusting trash, the beach was still filled with trash. The small dent we made in clean-up could not even be recognized. It amazed me that in this beautiful country people could litter with such disregard. Though this was frustrating, making an effort was very rewarding. When we finished cleaning each school, it seemed to lift the spirits of the people living in Bat Yam. It was like a little diamond in the middle of city filled with rubble. Israel has given so much to me in so many ways. This summer I gave back to Israel, and to planet Earth.
