Hello, my name is Diane. I am an officer of Beta Gamma Chi, the Coconino Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. We spent all year last year doing monthly clean-up projects in our community of Flagstaff, Arizona. Please accept my photo and essay regarding the recycling project that I spearheaded at my college.
I am originally from New Jersey, where recycling became law years ago, but Arizona, especially our community of Flagstaff, encourages recycling on our own.
I found that most recycling in our community is done by picking up containers that recycle materials other than glass such as certain plastics, paper, etc. Only glass materials are to be dropped off, by consumers, at 3 different locations in Flagstaff. However, this past year I worked with the city’s Environmental Services to have a glass pick-up done at Coconino Community College. Phi Theta Kappa footed the bill for 6 months of a 90 gallon container that was placed outside, on campus. Another member of Beta Gamma Chi hunted down the perfect container to be placed inside the college near our café eating area. I asked our maintenance crew to cut a door in the receptacle and put hinges on it. Each member of our organization could then take turns removing the plastic bucket from it, using a dolly from the college’s facilities department, and dump the collected glass into the container stored outside.
This project went so well for 6 months that Coconino Community College took the contract over, working with Environmental Services, and depending on the need, agreed to eventually turn the 90 gallon container into a 300 gallon container, thereby assisting the community in using our facilities to recycle glass.
I also started raising money for Beta Gamma Chi by working with a company that recycles empty inkjet cartridges, laser cartridges and old cell phones. There is a large cardboard display located on campus where people can drop off their empty cartridges or cell phones and I ask local businesses what they do with their empty inkjets. Most of them are happy to donate to our organization and the list keeps growing as I am incorporating more of our officers and members to participate in contacting local businesses.
