As part of a sister city partnership project between Keta Municipal Council in Ghana and Eschweiler Municipality in Germany, these two cities are implementing a joint municipal climate partnership project. This project is implemented under the auspices of Engagement Global, a German official institution that supports sister-city partnerships between German cities and cities worldwide.
The project is climate change mitigation centered, aimed at implementing climate change mitigation activities in the two cities to curb the negative effects of climate change. The activities to be implemented under this project included afforestation, mangrove restoration, promotion of renewable energy, promotion of sustainable agricultural projects, and many more.
A team made up of myself and three others visited Germany from Ghana in September 2023. The purpose of this official visit was to draft activities to be implemented by the two cities under the project. The team visited the Eschweiler Forest Reserve where we all had the chance to plant a tree each. We also had the chance to build a plastic guard around a tree to protect them from destruction by wild animals such as deer.
These are all efforts aimed at restoring the forest so that the negative effects of climate change will be mitigated by the afforestation project.
