The advent of modern farming techniques has led to some of the most efficient and abundant yields in history, the likes of which I observed first-hand while working with a startup company called Boundless Landscapes. Together with two other students, I planted micro-farms around the community and then sold the produce at local farm stands, learning how to problem-solve as we went along. The plot of land that we were farming consisted of clay soil full of rocks. To combat this issue, we had to remove all the large rocks and layer cardboard and comfrey fertilizer on top of the soil to make it viable. Colorado soil is oftentimes dry and clayey, making it extremely dense and resistant to water absorption. The combination of cardboard and comfrey fertilizer (rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) softened the soil so that delicate greens could thrive. Additional challenges included weeds, of which this plot had many. Although our methods of improving the soil yielded a wonderful crop of greens and tomatoes, it took a substantial amount of physical work because we did not rely on commercial herbicides. To further my education in plant science, I enrolled in Coursera classes that covered environmental science, sustainability, carbon footprints, and agricultural impact. Specifically, it was fascinating to learn of the environmental impact and food miles incurred with the export of soy to China. Whats more, Robert Cassanova, an eminent climate change researcher, suggested that I pursue a minor in data science to extend my contributions beyond the theoretical. Through IBM, I completed a professional Data Science Certificate of Specialization and learned about data analysis, statistical analysis, predictive modeling, and machine learning algorithms.
