PEACE at PRC

Nature has many beauties and wonders that can bring people together and create peaceful surroundings. The Nicodemus project inspired me through nature to step up, take a chance to build something for other people and bring a little peace in the midst of stressful times. Therefore, I chose to build a flower garden at my school, Pearl River Central High School in Carriere, MS. In the garden, I chose to place a tree, plant different species of flowers, add painted rocks and buddy benches. The garden is named Peace at PRC.

Peace at PRC brought people together through the work of our hands. The garden created a sense of peace amongst the chaos of Covid-19 restrictions at school. The Covid-19 restrictions, although for our safety, seemed elementary. Restrictions and rules such as walk in single file lines, using the bathroom once with the class, and social distancing everywhere. With the Peace at PRC garden, I was hoping to give the students and faculty a place to escape the stress and chaos of those restrictions and enjoy peaceful surroundings.
I began this project by getting approval from Principal Alfred. The principal allowed me to build the garden on campus and had faith that I could accomplish this challenge. She was more than happy to allow me to start this project once I presented my plans. I then began to reach out to different departments at the highschool such as the art department, NJROTC, and the National Honors Society to join me in completing this project. I also reached out to the community via Facebook and through our local newspaper, The Picayune Times. My initial goal was to reach $600. After several weeks of communicating this goal, the community of neighbors, friends, and family helped me exceed this goal by raising almost $1,000.00. I was beyond excited as I knew that I would be able to do more than my original plan.
The project began with some great volunteers helping pull up the existing grass so that we could add garden soil and weed barrier cloth. Once that was prepped, we began planting. The garden consists of a Crape Myrtle, which is native to Mississippi, herbs such as: chocolate mint, italian oregano, chive onion, sweet mint, and rosemary, two white gardenias, several other varieties of winter flowers such as pansies, two benches with a capacity of three people each, one fern, rocks painted by students in the art program, stepping stones, a bird bath, edging and all surrounded by red mulch to match the rest of the schools gardens.
To be truthful, I did not do this project for myself or for this scholarship opportunity. I did it mainly for the students and faculty to have a place of calmness where peace is felt in the midst of stress during this Covid-19 pandemic. I did this for my school, but also to say that I accomplished something. I became a leader through this project. This project means alot to me and many others at Pearl River Central High School. Peace at PRC will hopefully be a reminder that there is always peace amongst the chaos. My hope is that it will become a place where friendships bloom.
