During my senior year of 2020, I taught other students how to sew in a club I created to donate tote bags, toys, blankets, beds, pillows, and masks to animal shelters. This would encourage less use of mainly plastic bags and shopping for the things shelters require; meaning less incentive on fossil fuel burning to make and transport those items. As a result of this experience, I have expanded my sewing skills into a donation service during this pandemic. I am so grateful to have been able to donate over 230 masks and sell hundreds more in San Diego, California. Daily, I spend 5 to 12 hours sewing gender and age inclusive reusable masks to sell to clients and donate to grocery stores, retirement homes, animal shelters, and doctors offices. I also donate to delivery services, families in need, and elderly couples in my neighborhood who are at high risk. I feel immensely grateful to the people who risk their lives every single day to keep the community fed and healthy. I hope that the masks I give out with unique and cute patterns brighten people's days. I have also conducted raffles and fundraisers to spur along my donations. I have received unending support from my wonderful community, that I'm eternally thankful I have the skills to give back to.
While many people accept and use reusable masks, many people stick to buying disposable ones. Frustrated and tired of seeing every landscape I cherish turn into a mask ridden wasteland, I decided to found a one woman craft business upon zero waste ideals.
Lately, I realized that many people avoid zero-waste lifestyles because of expensive pricing. To solve this issue, I expanded my mask sewing to a sustainability kit, including reusable napkins, bowl covers to minimize saran wrap, grocery store and snack bags, and more. I donated a full sustainability kit to the leader of a cleanup crew in the city. With affordable prices, I intend to breach the stereotype that joins environmentally friendly actions and wealth. I intend for sustainable goods to be accessible to everyone so the range of people who believe they can benefit the environment is widened.

From this experience, I have learned the importance of trial and error. Mistakes can only strengthen my resilience as I continue to persevere. While attending college, I plan on starting a sewing club to create more widespread progress with donating masks to those in need. I also look to continue my business and inspire zero waste lifestyles within my fellow peers that hold the future of the Earth in their youthful hands. Sewing has transformed me into a more hardworking, patient, and compassionate person. I encourage all people to embark on their own journeys of self improvement through giving back to the community. On behalf of the Nicodemus Wilderness Project, I ultimately decided to do this Ecologist Apprenticeship project to live by an important saying. Inspiration is the greatest tool for change. I want to be that inspiration to change this world into a sustainable one.
