For the past ten years I have been working to earn my Eagle Scout rank in Boy Scouts. The largest requirement being the Eagle Project. For my project, I built a twenty five foot long retaining wall at the Famosa Slough in San Diego, California. The Famosa Slough is a protected reserve near the ocean where a vast number of birds, plants, and insects live. It is a piece of land and water that not enough people know and appreciate. I decided that it would be a great place for a project as the outer perimeter is owned by a non-profit organization and could use assistance. One of the outer paths was in need of reconstruction and it was unsafe for some hikers to use. The wall I built consisted of around 300 blocks and a few hundred pounds of gravel. After 8 eight hours of strenuous labor with many volunteers from my Boy Scout troop and friends, we had made a wall that was functional and aesthetically pleasing. The wall holds back an entire slope of dirt that collapses when it rains, it creates a level surface to walk on, and it prevents dirty runoff street water from entering the Slough. The project has provided a benefit that I am proud of and I know will benefit the community for years to come.
