Studying at a university in Hawaii, I have a daily view of the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Depending on which beach, I notice that some are cleaner than others. What makes a more obvious difference of cleanliness is the trash. Trash comes in many forms: glass bottles, nets, plastic, the list is endless. About 71% of earth's surface is water so litter could be floating in from any part of the planet. In my experience, I have only seen the shores of Hawaii but imagine the rest of the world. To help alleviate this problem, I dedicated my project to doing a beach cleanup with some of my classmates who agree that trash pollutes not just the beauty of the ocean but also the life that is inside of them. This holds importance in my life because I see the influence that the ocean has on many aspects including the climate, sea life, and consequently human lives. As the ocean has a grand influence in our lives, it makes sense that we as humans should take care of it. Based on all the trash and pollution found in our oceans, it is evident that the ocean is of small importance to us as humans. Although a beach cleanup is just a scratch in the surface in solving this global problem, I know it can benefit my community of Laie. People will notice that the garbage cans along the shore are placed there for a purpose and that filling those cans happens a lot faster than anticipated. The beaches are a popular spot for families to get together and swim, eat, or just enjoy the sun but this family time can't be fully enjoyed when there is trash that gets in the way of every step. Doing this beach cleanup shows that if we all take these small efforts to take care of our ocean and beaches, the ocean will take care of us.
