One of my greatest passions in life is helping others. I care deeply about my community and feel as though it is my responsibility to do all I can to help those in need. So in my Junior year of high school my friend and I co-founded the Conservation Club so that we could have an outlet to create change within our community. The purpose of the Conservation Club is to raise awareness of our environment and to prevent wasting natural resources within our school by creating projects that both help our community and promote sustainable use of our resources.
My club's proudest achievement is the book drive that we completed last spring in which we collected and donated over 1300 books to the Children's Medical Center. As the President of the club, I oversaw the entire drive, got it approved by our school, advertised, and collected donations. This book drive allowed us to both help these sick children have access to books and conserve paper by reusing books that would otherwise have been left unused and unwanted or even thrown away.
More recently, the Conservation Club hosted a clean up of a park near our school. Over forty students volunteered and together we collected thirteen bags of trash and five bags of recycling. This cleanup created a cleaner and safer environment for the children who regularly play in this park because we disposed of many hazardous materials that were present in the park.
Currently, the Conservation Club is working on a water bottle fundraiser that will sell water bottles in order to raise money for our school to buy a water bottle refiller. This will allow our school to reduce the number of disposable plastic water bottles that are horrible for the environment by replacing them with the reusable bottles we sold, which can be refilled by the refiller we are working towards having installed. Hopefully, this will be able to both reduce the amount of plastic wasted and also save students money in the long run by reducing the amount they spend on plastic water bottles by replacing them with a reusable alternative.
