Millions of people around the world are exposed to lead contamination of water and its harmful effects. Exposure to lead, especially in children, have lasting effects to development of brain, nervous system, and organs. It is estimated that over 5000 water systems and over 10 million service lines, in US alone, have lead contamination issues. The problem is compounded by the fact that accurate and actionable detection of lead in water today is an expensive and time consuming process.
My solution addresses the core issue of speedy, accurate and inexpensive detection of lead contamination, potentially helping people take preventative measures and maybe even save lives! It uses the latest development in nanotechnology, is easy to use, fast, accurate, inexpensive and portable.
Carbon nanotubes are strong conductors of electricity, and very sensitive to resistance. My idea is introduce, or dope, ions of elements that have strong affinity to lead, into the nanotube structure. Lead or lead compounds in water, react to the ions in the sensor, which add resistance due to build of lead molecules. The device accurately measures the change in current and maps it to proportional, EPA prescribed parts per billion scale of lead contamination levels in water. The results are then show on a custom mobile app. It is portable with its own battery source and the sensor cartridge is disposable. The device can also be re-programmed for other chemical contaminants in water such as mercury, and arsenic.
Early tests have been promising, and I have since raised over $50,000 to further develop the device and field test in real water sources. I am performing accuracy tests in Denver water and hope to see a day where I can bring the device to all households. I have also open sourced my sensor and analytics code so that any water organization can use the analytics code to produce a heat map for the water quality.

I actively promote water quality awareness in the community, and believe that with inexpensive, accurate, early detection as an option, my device can have significant impact on community health.
