Mt.Tabor park is so much more than a park to me. It is the place I go to escape during Finals week and clear my mind. It is the spot for me to gather with my friends on a lazy, summer day and have a nice picnic, looking over the city of Portland,Oregon. It is my favorite place to bond with my family as we hike together to the top of the hill on hazy mornings and watch the sunrise together. I realized that as much as this park was important to me, it was also important to my community who came there daily to walk their dogs, watch their kids play, or even catch up with their friends.
These are just few of the reasons why I decided to encourage my local peers to join me preserve our beautiful, large forested park. The mission of the project was to remove invasive plants and restore native plants. After removing invasive plants such as Himalayan Blackberry and English Ivy, my peers and I used mulch to retain moisture in the soil. It was a project so simple that anyone was capable to do it, in their own garden or school. But the meaning this project held for me exceeded my expectations. Working together with my peers on this project to improve the quality of Wildlife habitat within the park felt empowering and fulfilling. Because of this project, I am able to better understand ways I can give back to my community I love with the people I care about.
