Greetings all, my name is Jan Franco. I am currently majoring in Biology with a concentration in Environmental Science in order to create new ways of being sustainable that favor our living and planet Earth, as well as bringing humanity a step closer to the future. I chose to do an Apprentice Ecologist project on behalf of the Nicodemus Wilderness Project because I believe it will guide people on being conscious of protecting nature, our home.
I conducted the project at Footes Park, which is about 3 blocks away from where I live. I created a good-looking trash basket. I love going back home and being able to walk my dog to Footes Park, but even though the park has waste containers near the entrance, the pond area/deck do not. Everytime I would come to the pond there were cans and plastic bags or bottles around the deck and the surrounding water. I noticed how this was negatively impacting the wildlife of the pond (turtles, birds, frogs and fish) having in mind the fact that the park is their only home since there are no other green areas nearby. I decided to help my community and the pond's creatures by creating the pink wastebasket seen in the picture. I bought a basket, assorted strings making a braid, then tying it to the basket to then attach it to a pole, plus a small poster that say "Keep it Clean. Turtles, birds, frogs, fish and other small animals live here; don't destroy their only home". It was very gratifying to come back to the pond and notice less trash in the water and people actually using the pink wastebasket. I have the responsibility of coming every week to empty out the basket since I installed it. I truly noticed a positive change in the pond's wildlife and environment. This experience inspired and motivated me to keep working towards helping the world be a better place.
