Bowie X-pression is an up-cycling sculpture in the shape of the Bowie High School's mascot-a bulldog. This design for the bulldog was chosen to show the strength of not only the Bowie High School students, but also the Bowie community and their impact on the world whether it is environmental or economic. Surrounding the bulldog are stacks of books that are each painted a specific color- yellow, green, blue, red- in order to represent the four years-freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior- each student ventures through. These books symbolized that unity as students that we all share while the globe symbolized the global impact that we all project with recycling. This up-cycling sculpture was made up of plastic bottles, cans, old textbooks, newspapers, and chicken wire. Each student involved was in different departments and clubs at our school; all of which provided experience and knowledge that contributed to this project.

Many teens often view environmental efforts as an issue for future generations to deal with and are very disinterested with the subject writing it off as unappealing and boring. Being green shouldn't have to be viewed in this light; it should be entertaining and inspiring. I've personally learned through my own experiences that being green is not as uninteresting as it seems. I learned that it impacts the community that we live in and the people that we share it with. I wanted to find a creative way in which students just like me were able to also find the same joy and understanding in aiding and learning about the environment as I did. Bowie X-pression was my way of doing that. It aimed to take the first steps of many towards that goal by becoming an outlet for expressing bounded emotions that are often shut down by stress from school and constant horrific news that are bombarding the youth in today's age.

I'm very thankful that I was able to complete this project with the aid of other students from not only within the school, but in the community of Bowie; broadcast the importance of sustainability to 2,300+ people with the project at Bowie's Environmental Arts and Music Festival and in the city's annual parade; and impact my school's thinking on what it really meant to reuse, reduce, and recycle.
