I have been in the Boy Scouts of America BSA for 7 years now. I completed my Eagle Scout rank on September 14, 2017. Throughout my time in scouting I have held many leadership roles and practiced my leadership skills over the years. In order to complete my Eagle Scout rank I had to organize, plan, and design an Eagle Scout project.
For my project I chose to build 3 flowerbeds in my local elementary nature center that was sorely needing renovation and care. I began by contacting the school's principal and she directed me to the PTA's care taker for the center. Through him we discussed what he would like to see done to the nature center and allowed me to choose what I would do. After verifying with the caretaker what I had in mind I began drawing up plans to install 3 new flowerbeds along a walkway. After school I took measurements and sketched drawings to help me understand the material cost of the project. I then secured six hundred dollars for my project and sourced where I was going to get the materials. Later I recruited my neighbor to get the supplies needed in their pickup truck because I did not have the means to move the materials. These steps went well and according to plan. Before it came time to do the work for installing my improvement I sent out an e-mail to my boy scout troop telling everybody that I need help on my project and outlined what we were doing and what they should bring to help. I also made an announcement at the meetings the week before I had planned to do the work.
When the morning arrived, I collected all my extra gloves and tools in case people forgot to bring some. I also planned for a lunch and had brought plenty of water for everyone. When people began to trickle in, I first made the sign in and detail when they arrived and when they left to understand total hours spent. After that, I delegated work and made sure to properly explain what I wanted done and how to do it. When perhaps fifteen helpers had arrived, I was busy correcting mistakes and assuring people knew what to do. After everyone was doing their assigned jobs correctly, I pitched in and worked myself. I ran into a few parents who wanted to argue with me about how to do my own project and had to convince them that is was going to be done my way.
In the end, my flowerbeds looked better than I had imagined, and I felt very accomplished. Overall things had gone smoothly and according to plan. In total the project took 100 man hours to complete. I received complements from other scouts on how well I had run my project compared to others. The eagle project it designed to be a leadership challenge and I feel I did a good job.
