Lake Overholser

General Area

Lake Overholser is a nice reservoir in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The lake covers approximately 1,500 acres and was constructed in 1919 to provide water to a treatment plant. Lake Overholser is named after Ed Overholser who was the 16th Mayor of the city of Oklahoma City. It is surrounded mostly by a lake road that paths off through trees around a nice view to see including gated housing and wildlife and even touches 39th Street (Route 66). It borders mostly housing, small forest, and main road area. There is picnic tables in certain recreational areas that let you sit and relax or enjoy nature.

Project

On Wednesday April 11th at 8:30 a.m. I traveled to Lake Overholser to begin my project, it was a nice and sunny day. The temperature came to about 62-63 degrees Fahrenheit or so around the lake with wind chill. I parked my car at the southeastern most part of the lake, close to a tennis court. There is a small dam here as well, ending the lake. I found a half bag or so in this area by the dam. I then headed north exiting the dam. This area consisted little trash as it consisted few trees and not much else. A path starts about sixty yards down where joggers and others walk along getting exercise and social activity. This goes on for the most of the eastern part of the lake. I found close to a half bag or so along this area. The northern side of the lake is alongside the road path which turns into a bridge in small woods. The road path is about 40 feet away from 39th street. I had to drive along the north side and the western side to get from one recreational area to the next. I started to head south along the western side and half a mile down neighborhood starts. The entire western part of the lake consists of paths that branch off into small recreational areas. It is not rare to see people here doing different things during the daylight hours. Most of them trying to get a close glimpse of the lake. Along these areas I found different amounts of trash in each section. It was mostly just close to the lake but the road also had an amount as well. I found close to one bag until 36th. Here 36th street and other streets turn into dirt roads at the other side of the lake and you must drive around small areas with trees. At the southwestern areas there is a few more recreational type areas to be found with the occasional passerby or jogger. The road eventually twists and turns into a nice size parking lot. I found a half a bag or more trash in this area and overall I collected 2 and a half bags trash , around 65 pounds. I spent a total of 10 hours on the project.
