Texas NeuroRehab Center Trash Pick-Up Day:
My name is Christina and I am a therapist at Texas NeuroRehab Center in Austin, TX. I work with mainly special needs children and adolescents who are receiving inpatient treatment for a variety of behavioral and developmental disorders. I conduct a weekly social skills group with a group of children and adolescents aged 11 to 17. We are currently working on a theme of giving back to the community, and wanted to start with our own “backyard”. Most of these children are unable to fully read and write, so I asked them to verbally share with me about their experience and I have recorded it below:
“Name and describe the area where you conducted your project?”
-“Parking lot; street; outside; our campus.”
“What did we accomplish during our group project?”
-“Teamwork; picked up trash; worked together; took care of our earth and campus; thought about our environment.”
“Why is it important to take care of our environment and the area where we conducted our project?”
-“So we don’t live in a dirty earth; it makes us not trip on stuff; good for nature and animals; so cars can pass by; keep plants and pets safe”
“What can you do in the future to care for your environment?”
-“Pick up trash in my neighborhood; put trash in trash cans; recycle.”
