This project relates to the conservation of biodiversity and biological processes by addressing the environmental issue of the decline in Monarch butterfly populations and disruptions in their migration pathways due to the impacts of climate change, habitat loss from deforestation and urbanization, and wide-scale pesticide use. I addressed this issue by establishing a certified Monarch waystation garden located in Arizona (on a site sponsored by Chandler Preparatory Academy), which is along a recognized pathway suitable for the butterflies’ western migration travels. The garden provides a safe, pesticide-free habitat of nectar and host plants meeting the guidelines required by Monarch Watch for inclusion in their national registry. The garden was expanded to include nectar and host plants for butterflies of all kinds, and also for other pollinators like hummingbirds and bees.
The habitat includes two low planter beds, and a 40-foot long raised planter box. They are filled with milkweed, herbs, and nectar plants that provide food and breeding grounds for pollinators. Native varieties were selected whenever possible, as well as low-water-use, drought tolerant plants appropriate for our climate. The garden is pesticide-free. Additional features provided include a hummingbird feeder, shallow basin for a mud bath, and large stones for basking.
Seating is provided along the planter boxes so the area also serves as an outdoor classroom for Chandler Preparatory Academy students and faculty. The garden is open to the community. Educational signs are posted in the garden that provide information about Monarchs and pollinators, identify plants, and identify local butterflies.
This project matters because it helps to preserve an endangered species while providing educational opportunities for students, and citizen involvement for the community. It will directly benefit Monarch butterfly populations as they migrate through Arizona on their way to and from Mexico and Canada. It also benefits the sponsoring organization of Chandler Preparatory Academy, and the area community.
