Anyone growing up in a coastal town that emphasizes marine conservation can testify to the effect the ocean has on their life and childhood. I feel so lucky to see the Monterey Bay through every storm and season and time of day. The ocean is vital to Santa Cruz’s way of life; surfing, West Cliff sunsets, and the Beach Boardwalk all serve as tourist attractions and local staples. That’s why it’s so upsetting that Cowell’s, Santa Cruz’s most popular littoral, is one of the most polluted beaches in the state. Though contaminated water is the primary issue, plastic also litters the sand and poses a major threat to seabirds and marine mammals alike. This summer, I decided to look for a way to change that. I founded the Santa Cruz Environmental Alliance, an environmental organization that aims to engage Santa Cruz middle and high school students in beach clean ups and to promote environmental education. My main goal was to develop a student-led effort towards cleaning up local areas, one that would encourage innovative thought and eco-awareness among my generation. It worked! We’ve gathered hundreds of pounds of trash and presented at local schools. Starting such an organization has required tenacity and a willingness to wake up early to pick up trash, but it has also increased my awareness of all the things I can do—many of them easy—to make my community and my world a better place. What makes my organization different from other entries is that the effort was organized entirely by students, with adults serving only as volunteers or chaperons.
