My environmental ethics and ecology class had a huge final at the end of the semester. We were supposed to somehow impact our community in some way. I heard of a house that was torn down in the woods, which also had trails around, and thought it would be a good idea to build a recreational area. With the help of my teachers and classmates, we were able to clear out buckthorn and improve the trails with mulch. During the winter, I had to go to Prior Lake City Hall and speak with the council about the opportunity to build a park. After they agreed to the terms and the money that was provided, my connections with the DNR gave me the option to build a swing that over looks the lake and a picnic area that also over looks the lake. With countless hours and meetings about the arrangements of flowers and decorations, the person that lived in the house that was torn down has heard of the project I was doing and decided to donate five thousand dollars just for a butterfly garden. With that help and push of the donation, my group and I were able to plant around three thousand plants in one day. It is such a beautiful site, but it is not done yet. There are still some things that need touch ups for example, the main trail to the picnic area and swing needs stepping stones. The whole group of volunteers included my class, some friends that lived nearby and even boy scouts. I have always wanted to leave a mark on Earth and I had the opportunity to do so. Pike Lake in Prior Lake was not a place everyone has heard of, but now it is a very popular place to bird watch and just go for a walk.
