The Wetlands Education Team (WET) chose our own school property for a clean up site. In addition to school buildings, there is a large woods, with trails behind the school. We live in a rural area where there is still a lot of open space. Since it is fall, the leaves are changing colors, and it was a beautiful day to be outside.
We were surprised at what a mess our own school property was. We picked up a lot of food containers, such as chip bags and water bottles. We also found huge sheets of plastic and used paintball supplies. We think someone was playing paintball on the school property. It was fun to pick up the garbage and see what a difference we could make. One thing that would help is to talk to other people about what we saw and did. We don’t think people realize how much garbage they create, and making them aware of the problem will help them be part of the solution. To help tell people about the problem, we put stickers on the storm grates that say: “No Dumping – Drains to Stream.” We also put a short article into our school newspaper about our efforts and why it is important to keep the storm drains clean.
