Our group adopted a wetland around an SEA member’s home, which is the reason I wanted to show you how our group deserves to be Apprentice Ecologists.

We took an area of wetlands around a busy street and residential area. This stretch of road is driven often which meant careless drivers were more likely to throw things out their windows. We spent three hours combing the area for garbage, making sure to sort out the recyclables. One of our SEA member works at Fleet Farm, and provided us with the large orange bags to collect items in. We ended up collecting eight bags of items, five bags were garbage and three bags were recyclables.

We felt as though it may seem like a small area that we cleaned up, it still made a huge impact on the community. Our club cleaned up the area near the streets and got harmful items away from the creatures that call the area home. We saw many species of plants and animals from Canadian geese to Mallard ducks as well as some Buckthorn plants. It is such a rewarding experience to know that you made a difference by helping the environment around you. That is why our group of students is so dedicated to helping the environment and doing something for someone else.

SEA has often thought about reducing litter and we recently implemented a recycling program. We considered all the waste that our community makes and found ways to cut it down. By giving people reasons to care about cutting waste and providing knowledge. When people are informed, they tend to make better decisions and want to better themselves for a common good. We post signs stating recycling facts, why not to litter, and inspire people to do something good to help the environment. This also helped us keep the wetland area clean. We informed neighbors in the area on how to keep the area clean and how to be a responsible neighbor to the environment.

I feel the Apprentice Ecologist Initiative is a great opportunity for kids of all ages. It inspires people to take initiative and want to do something for the community. This project not only helps the environment but to show people what they are capable of. It makes kids turn off the tv, get up off the couch, and go out and explore the world around them. It helps people to make a positive difference in the world and build up self esteem. If more programs like the Apprentice Ecologist Initiative, it would help the world to become a cleaner, healthier place for not only man-kind, but all of Mother Nature’s creatures.
