I was lucky enough to find this special opportunity, as my project started out as my eagle scout project! I was asked to come into a local community garden that was on the site of a former "Options" building torn down a few years earlier. There was a bare patch of land in the corner of the fenced in park and it was peppered by strewn out rocks/boulders from the demolished building. Instead of moving these rocks and utilizing money, energy, electricity, and time... the rocks were left there and I built a mediation garden around them! In the final stages, the garden was furnished with four flower beds, two metal park benches and wheelchair accessible gravel pathways.
It started out as bare and untrimmed grass. After a few days of mowing and edging 9as shown in the picture) the project site was ready for gravel... almost. First, in order to keep maintenance costs low, I placed organic weed barrier down over my entire 2,050 sq. ft. project area. finally, wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow load was pushed into the park and dumped, then spread, then compacted into the park that stands there today.
All in All, the project's main purpose was to continue me onto my path to Eagle Scout, but is now an opportunity to earn money in the form of college tuition!
