On October 09 2005 my family and I took a trip to Belle Island. Belle Island is a 982-acre Island located in the middle of the Detroit River and is accessed from the MacArthur Bridge or by boat. Once we arrived on the Island we had difficulty in deciding on which area to start the cleanup. We drove by several locations on the island such as: the Scott fountain, the Detroit Yacht Club, the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, a coast guard post, golf course and a swimming beach, the only beach in the city of Detroit. We decided to hike through the nature trail where we were surrounded by tall trees, insects and even what appeared to be poison ivy. We saw some interesting wildlife on the trail: a group of Fallow deer, black squirrels and chipmunks. At the end of the Nature trail is a small lake with geese and ducks. The nature trail was relatively clean. We decided to move along to the southwest tip of Belle Island. The majority of the litter that I picked up was found along the river bank. I picked up discarded paper plates, plastic cups, aluminum cans and empty soda pop bottles (which I recycled). I also found some unusual trash: a fishing pole, hat and a pair of old shoes.

I really enjoyed this cleanup project. It made me feel good to know that I was a part of beautifying such a beautiful island. My feelings didn't vanish after the cleanup project ended. I felt a need to take action. I emailed the Friends of Belle Island, an organization for preservation of the island. I suggested that instead of the annual cleanup that is currently in place, more is needed. Now would be would be a perfect opportunity to promote a quarterly cleanup promoting community service throughout the Detroit and metropolitan Detroit area schools as a community service project.

The project was a wonderful learning experience for me that I would love to share with others.
