My name is Jiovanni and I am in the 6th grade. I am a member of the Community Action Commission’s Across Ages Intergenerational Program in Harrisburg, Pa. In the community I live in, there is a lot of crime, drug transaction, and deaths of young people. In the program, I have the opportunity to give back to my community by cleaning up the streets, cleaning the playgrounds, helping out in community gardens, and planting trees. The program offers an at-risk youth like me the opportunity to learn positive life skill training, giving back to the community that I live in, and progress positively in school academically and behaviorally. When we were asked to volunteer to plant trees in my community, I learned more than just planting trees I learned that by planting trees I would help save the cost of juvenile crime and crime in general, help reduce ozone levels, and absorb sound and noise pollution. It is refreshing to know that because trees breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen we all can breathe easier. I became very interested in helping my community get back on its feet and I hope that we continue to do positive things in the program so that the city of Harrisburg can be a nice good place to live, go to school, and work.
