Nothing could have been created more perfectly or beautifully than the world in which we live. Unfortunately, there are those who do not see this beauty and perfection and those people are the ones who pollute this beautiful world. The beaches of Florida are absolutely beautiful and, as a result, attract many people to visit them. Of course, wherever many people are gathered, trash is sure to accumulate over time. This holds true with many of Florida’s beautiful beaches.
I attend high school about ten minutes from Florida’s shoreline so the pollution of beaches is known by many people in our community. During this past 2012 high school volleyball season, I was the captain of our Varsity Volleyball team. As captain, I decided to address the issue of beach pollution in a manner that would provide both a team bonding experience and an opportunity to give back to our community through cleaning our beaches. I arranged for our Varsity team to participate in a beach cleanup one Saturday in October through the organization Keep Brevard Beautiful. We went to one of the many beaches in Melbourne Beach, FL and proceeded to collect about seventy pounds of trash which was found on that beach. We then discussed, as a team, the lessons we had learned from cleaning the beach and how we could apply those lessons to other experiences we may encounter in life. Such experiences may include cleaning up a locker room after our team uses it so that it is kept clean or simply learning that tackling a project as a team yields better results more efficiently than taking on a project as an individual.
This was an incredible experience for our team. We really bonded through the teamwork we used to collect so much trash from the beach and we all felt very proud of our efforts to keep our beautiful beaches clean and pollution free. Every member of our team frequents the beach so I really felt like we were doing our part to give back to the community so these beaches could continue to be a source of entertainment and beauty for everyone. Personally, this experience meant a lot to me because I really appreciate the beauty of nature and felt blessed to be able to contribute to that beauty for myself and others who live in the area and also appreciate the natural beauty found in Florida’s beaches.
