Though we may take it for granted, clean water is vital to every part of the environment we live in. Recognizing the importance of this precious resource, I decided to focus my Eagle project on keeping the water around me clean. I spoke to the Public Works Director at the Village of Cherry Valley and asked if a group of Boy Scouts and I could put stickers that read “No Dumping. Drains to River” on storm drains around the village. He liked the idea and the project was approved by the village council soon after. Together, we found a company, Das Manufacturing, to purchase the curb markers, adhesive, wire brushes, safety vests, and door hangers (with the same “No Dumping. Drains to River” message on them). I informed my Boy Scout troop of my plan for the project and invited them to help me.
On the day of the project, I split all the volunteers into groups with one adult to drive and two or three boys to apply the markers. Each group was given the materials needed and a map showing exactly which storm drains they should mark. The adult drove to each drain and the boys cleaned the surface and applied the marker. Some boys were given door hangers and they put these pieces of paper on doors all around the village. The boys were extremely helpful and the project went very smoothly, so I figured some pizza was well deserved. In the end, the village was appreciative, the Boy Scouts learned a little about how damaging pollution is, and hopefully, the dumping has greatly decreased.
