Hurricane Sandy really hit my hometown and surrounding areas hard. It was so much worse than any of us expected and it affected many people. I was fortunate to only loose power for nine days and have a few branches fall in my yard. I’ve never experienced anything like this before and I knew that this was the time for me to act. I quickly organized a group of friends and teammates and soon we were in the oceanfront town of Point Pleasant helping anybody we could. It was shocking the amount of devastation we saw. The town I spent time in all summer was now in ruins. I couldn’t believe that the parking lot I worked in the past summer was now under feet of sand. The images on T.V. don’t do any justice to what you see in person. The devastation really hit me when we went to help this one elderly lady remove her washer and dryer from her house. We walked up to her house and all off her belongings were scattered throughout her front yard. We got into the house and saw where the water had been. The water line was five feet from the floor. Everything she owned was destroyed and I’ve never felt more grateful for what I have in my life. Another house that really hit me was this family’s beachfront cottage. We walked off the battered boardwalk to see a man and his son trying to shovel out their basement. We went down in the basement and couldn’t believe the amount of sand that had built up. The corners of the house had mounds that were up to six feet tall. We shoveled for a few hours and got their whole house clear for them to treat it to prevent mold. It was a crazy sight and it felt real good to clear everything out in a few hours opposed to them doing it all day. We spent the next week and a half nine to five everyday trying to help the best we could. We did everything from shoveling sand to gutting entire houses. So many people were affected and we never had a shortage of people to help. The long days were well worth it and it felt so good to start something that ended up helping so many people.
