GreenUp 500 is a pet project initiated by Dominic Nsikan the DeforestACTION West Africa School Engagement Coordinator (www.Deforestaction.org). GreenUp 500 is an environmental stewardship project modeled after the DeforestACTION school engagement program which seeks to engage school students and teachers to take actions aimed at halting deforestation. The project aims at engaging 50 students from 5 secondary schools around Port Harcourt in planting 500 trees in Port Harcourt Community. However, my passion for the environment and the role young people must play in it’s conservation had given me the motivation to use my experience to engage about 200 students from 10 community primary and secondary schools across West Africa to take action in stopping deforestation in their communities. As the West Africa school engagement coordinator for DeforestACTION, I have used this position to foster active involvement of youths in countries like Ghana, Cameroon and Liberia on sustainable environmental development. As an environmental educator I had in partnership with the Rivers State Ministry of education successfully integrate into about 40 schools the study of environmental education starting from the elementary. I have initiated a number of grassroots actions aimed at raising awareness of environmental issues among young people and local communities. I had further promote large scale projects on gardening in Rivers state, forest conservation and rehabilitation as well as improving the ecological situation in the oil-polluted territories in the Niger delta region of Nigeria.
