“Hmm…the park is really empty today. Yet, there’s so much trash!” That’s what I was thinking as I walked into Brooktree Park in San Jose, California with my two younger sisters. On June 26, 2006, I led an Apprentice Ecologist Initiative cleanup project. My sisters and I had no trouble finding scraps of trash to pick up. The debris was sitting on the grass, hiding behind trees, mixed in with the rocks, and other parts of the park. My sisters and I collected the waste in a plastic grocery bag. At the end of our cleanup adventure, the bag was filled to the top with an abandoned potato chip bag, candy wrappers, an empty paper towel roll, and much more. I was truly excited to lead the project since I knew that it would help the environment. I enjoyed having the feeling that I was actually doing something to better the world and improve the park’s appearance for the rest of the community. The cleanup was more fun than I expected. My sisters even said that they wanted to go back to the park the next day to help clean up more trash!

In order to reduce the amount of litter in Brooktree Park, there should be more trash bins spread out across the park. There were multiple trash cans available; however, they were all concentrated into one area. The park would benefit if there were more waste bins that were evenly distributed. It is important to keep Brooktree Park clean because many people, especially children, play in the park. A litter free park would improve the park’s safety and boost the morale of those who visit it. In my opinion, the Apprentice Ecologist Initiative is a valuable program and is promoting a good sense of view that people should try to help conserve the Earth by not littering. This planet is our home and it is our duty to take care of it and all the natural beauty it holds.
