I have heard several times that my generation will not only switch jobs seven times but also careers close to three times. Currently I am in the midst of choosing Education as my major. I was born in California and then moved to Mexico until the age of four, until I returned back to the States to begin preschool. I have never dealt with Mexico’s school system but hearing from my cousin’s they make it sound very complicated. Being bilingual gives me an advantage in being able to help others to communicate or understand and through teaching I can impact or make a difference in a kid’s educational development.
I am thankful that my mother taught me Spanish as my first language and am especially grateful that being bilingual has never affected me negatively in the academic aspect. I remember struggling a bit with my transition from speaking Spanish and having to learn English while going to an American preschool. However, I believe I adapted much better than my peers and seeing other Mexican dissent students struggle motivates me to help with the early development of people with Hispanic heritage. My mother is the main person I communicate with in Spanish and every once in a while with my family members from Mexico either on Facebook or over the telephone. I am planning on conversing more often with my Mexican family to get practice and polish my speaking, like not forgetting words and preventing an accent to form. I plan setting up weekly phone calls and also practicing with Spanish speaking friends around my school.
Currently I was asked to join the Student Academic Service at my college to work with the Spanish speaking students and help translate what they need help with. Recently another offer of tutoring someone in Spanish has come along and I am in the process of looking into it. Through teaching, a person is able to re-register information and learn it better because it exercises the brain and brings out stored information. By helping others my skills will become stronger and not only will it be prosperous but also joyous to see people expand their abilities. Although my education career is not set in stone, I have my goals set on helping kids from Mexican dissent because I am blessed to speak another language and want to use it to help others.
What has always held me back from fully dedicating myself to an Education career is that coming from a Hispanic heritage I have seen the worst side of poverty so my drive to make money is prominent and teaching does not always offer the best salary. I am also very interested in psychology and am currently enrolled in psychology classes that go along with teaching; I do not want to close out any possible opportunities to help others. I have become very attached to my state of California but teaching there is not as financially beneficial as it would be in other States. It is an obstacle I must face and perhaps a sacrifice I will make, to not move back home after college, because as I keep thinking about my future I do not want to allow certain things to hold me back from choosing my potential career.
