Green greetings to all!
As we are environmental students of Andhra University, A.P., India, we had done our project work on ground water quality and pollution aspects due to the heavy metal intrusion from near-by industries like petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, fertilizers and pesticide industries, etc in Visakhapatnam city. Heavy-metals were analyzed with the help of ICP-MS and also representative samples were checked for their physico-chemical and bacteriological parameters and were compared with Bureau of Indian Standards- limits for water quality. Some of them had exceeded the permissible limits. The people who are utilizing those waters for domestic purposes suffer from various diseases from that contamination. So, apart from going for environmental friendly technologies in quality control, usage of renewable energy resources or water conservation and also like changes in raw material, processing etc; there is also a need to go for various epidemiological studies from time to time.
Apart from these, we had done our extension works on WORLD POPULATION DAY, went to schools and also participated in our academic exhibition in 2011 to spread the word and especially I have been demonstrating people about the importance of environmental well being and our “DO’s and DO NOT’s” to most of the people around me and serving my bid to create awareness among common mass of people and also attended “SCIENCE CONGRESS” and various seminars regarding environmental pollution to extend my knowledge about current facts and issues.
The most unfortunate thing is most of us were following mere NIMBY (Not in My Back Yard) policy and unless they take responsibility, our Mother Earth may not sustain longer to serve us. So, People should come up to conserve water, utilize minimal energy resources (fossil fuels) and switching over to renewable resources, using eco- friendly products (like spray cans, deodorants, water bottles, LED bulbs etc ), reducing solid waste generation and pollution etc.
Mother earth is ours….
Make it forget the fears!!!
